Flat Plat membranes comprise a curtain of hollow fibres fixed at either end by resin within a collection tube. The FP membranes are immersed in activated sludge where biological reactions break down wastewater pollutants. Treated water (permeate) passes through the membrane pores, leaving all suspended materials, including bacteria and attached viruses, in the reaction tank. Air released from below the membranes has several functions:
